Fireback

Made by Thomas Rutter
Colebrookdale Furnace
Pennsylvania
1763

This fireback was placed behind the fire to protect the masonry at the rear of the fireplace, and to reflect heat back into the room. The wrought-iron andirons, also known as "firedogs," kept the logs off the hearth floor, allowing air to circulate around the fire.
